EX-JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES FOR JESUS CONVENTION

Blue Mountain Christian Retreat (New Ringgold, Pa.) was once again the host for the Second International Convention of Ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses for Jesus. The weekend convention, held October 31 through November 2, 1980, featured teaching about how to witness to Jehovah’s Witnesses. Also ex-Witnesses shared their experiences of becoming Christians.
The convention opened with the welcoming address by William (Bill) I. Cemar, convention chairman and a former high-ranking Jehovah’s Witness. Noteworthy speakers included Dr. Randolph O. Yeager, Greek scholar and author of The Renaissance New Testament; Dr. Milton Fisher, Hebrew scholar and president of the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary; Steven Board, executive director of Eternity magazine; Professor James Bjornstad, author and director of the Institute of Contemporary Christianity; Pastor Joe Hewitt, author of I Was Raised a Jehovah’s Witness; Charles Trombley, author of Kicked Out of the Kingdom and Bible Answers for Jehovah’s Witnesses.
In addition to the many moving testimonies, teaching segments included instruction about Jehovah’s Witnesses’ misunderstanding of Scripture, a slide presentation dealing with the Watchtower’s New World Translation, the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ view of the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and ways in which the Watchtower Society has mistranslated the Greek and Hebrew Scriptures, including an exposé of the “a god” translation of John 1:1 (NWT)
These innovative conventions have proved vital and fruitful. During the First Annual Convention (held in 1979), for example, a young woman flew from California to Pennsylvania to seek help for her husband, who was involved in the Jehovah’s Witness sect. This year she returned along with her husband, now a born-again Christian. In addition, a Jehovah’s Witness who was in attendance at this year’s convention made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and left the Watchtower Society.
