White House Tries to Tamp Down Trade War Fears as China Retaliates

WASHINGTON — White House officials moved quickly on Wednesday to calm fears of a potential trade war with China, saying the administration’s proposed tariffs were a “threat” that would ultimately help, not hurt, the United States economy, hours after China said it would punish American products with similar levies.
The administration’s insistence that a trade war was not imminent came as the United States and China traded tit-for-tat penalties that caused wild swings in stock markets from Hong Kong to New York. Led by more audacious leaders than either country has had in decades, China and the United States are now locked in a perilous game of chicken, with the possibility to derail the global economic recovery, disrupt international supply chains and destabilize the huge yet debt-laden Chinese economy.
White House officials reiterated on Wednesday that China must stop the “unfair” trading practices President Trump believes have disadvantaged American companies and workers, but they held out the possibility that tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods outlined on Tuesday might never go into effect. The dog continues to wag his tail of distractions (facts-independently verifiable):
- Claiming mass rapes migrant groups seeking asylum (not so).
- "Trade-war" (unofficially) tariffs with China.
- DOW (wall street) at this point down -690.
- No knowledge of payment to a porn star. requesting more time for time case.
- EPA Director --excessive spending/living arrangements (scum of the swamp).
- National Guards [2,000 -4,000] to the Border (currently undefined role-- Knee jerk action). He is not the first President to send them--though he claimed to be).
Is this what the American people expected and voted? CM

I think many of us expected the president would conduct himself in office in ways capable of producing outcomes in the reality you cite, CM, but only the most pessimistic among us thought the moral and ethical "swamp" he'd create would be as deep and dangerous as it has become.
Many of his supporters are pleased with the Supreme Court appointment, the deregulation moves he's taken, and the tax cut (though many are now realizing the cut is not adding nearly as much to their paychecks as the president told them it would). For reasons known only to them, the ethical lapses, serial lying, cabinet member failures, and policy-making on the fly practices of the administration do not cause his supporters significant concerns, principally, it seems to me, because they follow his lead on such matters - that all negative characterizations, no matter the supporting fact base, are "fake news." (FACT CHECK: They aren't fake news)
Two sources of hope in this dreary landscape: The mid-term elections and the Mueller investigation.

What would happen to stocks and bonds if ‘Wag the Dog’ returns in Syria-- Ivan Martchev
Trump wants a war before the finding of the gas attack investigation is completed. He has no Syria strategy for war or the peace. He has not coordinated with his allies, calculate the cost of war, sought authorization from Congress and signal bombs are coming. Is this the way to make America great? CM

Mattis Wanted Congressional Approval Before Striking Syria. He Was Overruled.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Tuesday. He briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill about last week’s allied airstrikes in Syria. Erin Schaff for The New York Times
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis urged President Trump to get congressional approval before the United States launched airstrikes against Syria last week, but was overruled by Mr. Trump, who wanted a rapid and dramatic response, military and administration officials said.
Mr. Trump, the officials said, wanted to be seen as backing up a series of bellicose tweets with action, but was warned that an overly aggressive response risked igniting a wider war with Russia.
Friday night’s limited strikes on three targets, which lasted under two minutes, were the compromise.
The debate reflects a divide between Mr. Trump and the defense secretary, who, like no other member of the cabinet, has managed to maintain a cordial relationship with the president even while reining him in... CM

My mother taught us growing up, think for yourself. If you don't, someone would think for you. Unfortunately, they will not have your best interests in mind. Can you blame Israel? American voters were too beholding to a man, a party, and greed= Donald J. Trump. CM

And what is that supposed to mean?? Do you think the USA was an innocent population? From the very start even before the forming of the USA bloodshed to an extent of genocide proportions among the native population was committed by those who had intruded?
I think you are the one who should heed your own suggestion which you made about reading a history book ...
Still, what's wrong with my above statement about the USA being the only regime to actually have used nuclear weapons, and even against civilians? Who is the US regime to now demand denuclearization of any other country, when they have been the only ones thus far who used such weapons, and especially so when it was already very clear and plain that Japan was in the process of seeking truce and an end of the war??

Still, how does your statement relate to what I had mentioned and asked in previous posts concerning the fact that the USA has been until now the only regime that actually used nuclear weapons against another country and in those 2 attacks targeted specifically civilian population? Why, of all countries, would the USA have any say in or make any demands of any other country regarding whether or not they have nuclear weapons ????Why does the USA not insist on Israel -- the only Near Eastern country with nuclear weapons (!) -- becoming part of the treaty agreement regarding nuclear weapons control, and instead scream and yell about Iran, who is part of that treaty and as such under the control of the respective organization which inspects such countries regularly (and which has affirmed, that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons)??

Tucker Carlson criticizes Trump's strike
Ex-NATO commander:
Top US national security officials continue to defend the Trump administration's claim that it killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in response to an imminent threat to American lives, but the lack of evidence provided to lawmakers and the public has fueled lingering skepticism about whether the strike was justified.
President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and top military officials have offered similar explanations for targeting Soleimani, citing an "imminent" threat from his plans to carry out what Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley called a "significant campaign of violence" against the US in the coming days, weeks or months.
But questions have continued to swirl in recent days about the imminence of such Iranian attacks, whether the administration fully considered the fallout from such a strike against Soleimani, and if an appropriate legal basis was established for the presidential authorization of lethal force
How Trump's decision unfolded to kill a top Iranian general
A Republican congressional source familiar with the administration's decision to strike Soleimani acknowledged that in the past the President "has been reluctant to take military action" in this case, the killing of an American contractor, the wounding of others, and the subsequent embassy protests "crossed his line." His advisers also pointed out to the President that if he "didn't respond now, they (Iran) will continue to cross it."

You realize our strike was retaliatory right?
Not at all ... Actually, the Iranian general was travelling on a diplomatic mission, as a messenger of the Iranian government with a message for the Saudi government, and scheduled to deliver the message the next morning at a meeting to the Iraq president who had arranged the diplomatic correspondence as a mediator. The whereabout of the Iranian general and the purpose of his travel were known to all parties involved ... thus the man and those accompanying him traveled on civilian flight with no special security precautions (which proved to be a fatal mistake as one can obviously not trust the USA regime to abide by international agreements). Therefore, what happened is plainly and clearly the murder of a diplomat messenger who has immunity under all international agreements and laws.
Apparently, Mr. Trump in his ignorance and arrogance was led to believe a fabricated story by his war hawks and fell for their unsatisfiable desire to have an open war with Iran. And now, after these hawks have realized the stupidity of their plan, they throw Trump under the wheels and stab him in his back by slowly distancing themselves from any responsibility.
Since impeachment endeavors did not seem to work for ruining Trump's re-election, they resorted to this insane method ... most likely more successfully. The US folks at large want their soldiers back home, they do not want more wars, etc ...just as Trump promised before his election. Now, he is faced with losing his face over this murder farce or start up open war or ..... and has lost most of his voter base at home over this matter.
-
Right, because they hadn't attacked our Embassy, or ships, or drones in the last two years.... Right, this wasn't retaliatory at all.... Oh brother.
