What Would Love Do?
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6) (NET)
We do this legalistically but it does not necessarily involve a right attitude of our heart. But if we equate the Lord with Love, since God is love, we can seek out love as our motive in all we do. Asking what love would do in the situation, only to wind up moving in the right direction having our paths straight.
An example might be how wicked people or believers obeyed OT Law. The wicked would think themselves good for not stealing. But the believer, like Abraham, motivated by love, would give to others instead of simply not stealing from them. Indeed, the Sermon on the Mount and the entire NT ethic rests on doing the opposite from what the Ten Commandments forbade.
In love we give instead of steal. In love we work to bless our enemies’ life instead of simply not killing him. In love we work to prosper our neighbor instead of simply not coveting his wealth and property. And so on....
Try asking yourself "What would love do?" the next time something comes up and see where it leads.
