WASHINGTON — The Trump administration’s decision to end American funding to a United Nations agency that provides assistance to millions of Palestinian refugees was denounced broadly on Friday by international officials, former United States diplomats and Palestinians who were reeling from the elimination of a decades-long policy of support.
The State Department announced the funding cut on Friday afternoon, after it had already been confirmed by a former senior official at the United States Agency for International Development who had spoken to journalists.
“The United States will no longer commit further funding to this irredeemably flawed operation,” Heather Nauert, the chief State Department spokeswoman, said in a written statement.
The move was pushed by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and top adviser on the Middle East, as part of a plan to compel Palestinian politicians to drop demands for most of the refugees to return to what they call their homeland.
At a meeting this month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo argued against the drastic funding cut. But Mr. Kushner prevailed, said R. David Harden, who was briefed on the plans and oversaw projects in the Palestinian territories for more than a decade until leaving U.S.A.I.D. in April.
“What we’re seeing right now is a capricious move that has a very high risk of unsettling the region,” Mr. Harden said, noting that the relief agency supported about five million refugees.
Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the cuts could destabilize refugee camps not only in the West Bank and Gaza, but also in Jordan and Lebanon.
Israeli officials did not comment on the cuts, although they have repeatedly expressed the view that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, known as Unrwa, is a problem.

America, America, God has blessed;
Why can't you help the rest? --CM
The meanness of Mr. Trump and his son-in-law is unconscionable. This move to end funding to assist millions of Palestinian refugees is unnecessary, coldhearted, and reckless. It's "...a capricious move" that will have a very high risk of unsettling the region". There will be trouble unmeasured. Why is it that this American Administration loves hurting certain groups of people? When you push people against the wall, they will come out fighting like a cornered cat. Why is America making trouble for Israel? She has enough on her hands.
America has lost her way when it comes to high morals and compassion. Why is she so hardheaded? Why not listen:
- “Hamas is constantly trying to conduct attacks from the West Bank,” said Peter Lerner, a retired Israeli military spokesman who has argued against cuts. “Why give them more incentive? Instead of kids going to school or to vocational-training centers, they’ll have no place to be.”
Germany and other donors speed up funding for Palestinians after US aid cut
Following President Donald Trump's move to cut aid to the UN agency for Palestinians, 11 nations have rushed to deliver their funds early. The agency appealed for $800 million to provide aid to Palestinian refugees.
Germany to Boost Funds to UNRWA Amid Reports of Cuts by the U.S.
A U.S. State Department official, however, told Haaretz Thursday that there is 'no change at this time'
Germany is preparing a "substantial" increase in its contributions to the cash-strapped UN agency for Palestinian refugees amid reports that the United States plans to withhold a large share of its funding, according to a letter seen by DPA.
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) supports Palestinians who lost their home as a result of the Middle East conflict. It helps around 5 million people, providing food aid, operating schools and running health centers.
Berlin is "preparing the allocation of further means of a substantial volume," German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas wrote Thursday to his EU counterparts, who have been holding informal talks in Vienna. He did not say how much Germany would contribute, but noted that it would not be enough to make up the agency's current shortfall of 217 million dollars.
Germany remembered her past when she was helped (Airlift). Thanks, Germany, you have a heart! CM

The politics against Palestinians by means of supporting the Zionist empire in its land robbery and imprisonment of the Palestinians in the largest outdoor prison in the world (Gaza) has started long before Trump ... and has been a major factor of German vassal politics as well.
Don't be fooled by current day mainstream media propaganda and fake news. -

Mr. Trump, stop the underhanded tactics to force the Palestinians to the table! You're hurting many mothers and children. Don't damage an upcoming generation. Don't do it. You're creating a problem on Israel's doorstep. CM

Your President (Trump) seems to love destroying people's lives. I forgot, he has problems and wants others to feel pain too. Why can't he spare the Palestinians and help Israel in the process? It's going to get ugly over there fast. Trump and his son-in-law will be the blame. Can the world take any more of mean men pain? CM
